Water Fire Extinguisher: purpose and application
A conventional water extinguisher cools burning ordinary combustible material. It may suit selected paper, timber and textile risks where the equipment rating and site conditions support its use. It should not be treated as a universal extinguisher. Energized electrical equipment, burning cooking oil and flammable liquids present hazards for which a conventional water discharge can be inappropriate or dangerous.
Selection and specification
Compare capacity, tested fire rating, handling weight, hose design and the environment where the unit will be stored. A water-mist extinguisher is a different product with its own approvals and limitations, not simply another name for a standard water cylinder. In a mixed-risk office or warehouse, water equipment may need to be complemented by other agents chosen for electrical or liquid-fuel areas.
Installation, inspection and limitations
Keep the label legible so users can distinguish it from other extinguishers. Inspect for leakage, corrosion, missing seals and blocked access, with professional servicing at the required intervals. Protect against freezing or excessive heat outside the product specification. If the room use changes or electrical equipment is installed nearby, review suitability before leaving the existing unit in place.
