Fire Extinguisher Types
Understand the differences between powder, CO2, foam, water and wet chemical extinguishers when planning equipment for your building.
Fire Extinguisher Types: purpose and application
Fire extinguisher types differ by agent and tested fire rating. Ordinary combustible materials, flammable liquids, cooking oils and energized electrical equipment create different selection problems. The label on the actual unit is more useful than cylinder colour alone. Fire-class letters can differ between standards, so compare the full rating and the manufacturer instructions rather than assuming every Class C label means the same hazard.
Selection and specification
ABC dry powder can cover several common risks when the model is rated for them, but discharge leaves residue. CO2 is often considered around energized equipment where residue is a concern. Water is generally for ordinary combustibles; foam is selected for its stated liquid and solid fuel ratings. Wet chemical equipment is commonly specified for cooking oil hazards. Clean-agent alternatives require a separate suitability review.
Installation, inspection and limitations
Do not substitute an extinguisher solely because its capacity matches the old unit. A room converted to a kitchen or electrical equipment area may need a different agent. Provide trained users with clear access to the selected equipment and a safe escape route. Portable equipment is for an early-stage incident within the user training and site emergency plan; evacuation takes priority when conditions are unsafe.
What to confirm before ordering
- 01Identify fuel and electrical hazards
- 02Read the model-specific fire rating
- 03Consider residue and user capability
- 04Keep servicing and placement records
Common questions
Is one extinguisher type suitable for every room?
No. Kitchens, electrical rooms, offices and stores can require different agents or combinations. A site risk review helps identify suitable types and locations.
