Foam Fire Extinguisher
Foam extinguisher selection for specified solid-fuel and flammable-liquid risks, with clear agent and disposal requirements.
Foam Fire Extinguisher: purpose and application
Foam extinguishers form a blanket over suitable burning liquids and can provide cooling for their rated ordinary combustible hazards. Their suitability depends on the specific foam, fuel and tested rating. A product described as AFFF is not automatically suitable for every solvent or industrial liquid. Kitchens with hot cooking oils and energized electrical risks require a different suitability assessment.
Selection and specification
Specify the fire rating, nominal capacity, fuel type, discharge arrangement and agent formulation. Ask whether the proposed foam is fluorine-free or fluorinated and obtain the supporting technical and safety data. Solvent hazards may require a specialist alcohol-resistant formulation. Do not assume that an existing cylinder can accept a different foam without approval from the equipment manufacturer.
Installation, inspection and limitations
Inspect the cylinder, hose, seal and label, and follow the manufacturer service instructions. Foam discharge and drained agent need controlled handling rather than release into ordinary drains. Keep the extinguisher in a visible, accessible position and protect it from conditions outside its operating range. The chosen unit remains a first-response tool rather than a substitute for a designed fuel-storage protection system.

Common questions
Are foam and wet chemical extinguishers the same?
No. Wet chemical equipment is commonly specified for cooking oil hazards. Foam is selected for its particular solid and liquid fuel ratings; check the product label.
