Safety Glasses and Goggles

Safety Glasses and Goggles: purpose and application
Safety glasses and goggles protect against different eye hazards when selected to the appropriate specification. Ordinary prescription glasses and sunglasses do not establish industrial impact or splash protection. Open-sided safety spectacles and sealed goggles are not equivalent products. The task and exposure determine the required design.
Selection and specification
Specify the hazard, lens marking, fit and compatibility with other PPE. Splash hazards may require a suitable goggle and additional face protection, while welding requires a separately selected filter arrangement. Consider prescription needs, fogging, ventilation and side coverage. Request documented performance for the exact model.
Installation, inspection and limitations
Clean with approved methods and inspect lenses, seals and straps for damage. Scratched lenses can impair visibility, and damaged frames may no longer retain protection. Share storage and replacement instructions with users. Protective eyewear should fit during the actual task rather than be selected only from a catalogue photograph.
