Wind Sock
Wind-direction indicator enquiries for assessed industrial, emergency-planning and site-operational needs.
Wind Sock: purpose and application
A wind sock gives a visible indication of local wind direction and movement. It can support site operations and emergency planning where wind direction matters, but it is not a precision weather instrument unless the complete system has that documented capability. Visibility depends on placement, colour, size and surrounding obstructions.
Selection and specification
Specify sock dimensions, material, frame or swivel arrangement, pole requirements and viewing distance. Outdoor UV exposure, dust and local weather affect material choice and replacement needs. If night visibility is required, identify the lighting and electrical scope separately. Location should be reviewed so nearby structures do not create a misleading sheltered indication.
Installation, inspection and limitations
Inspect the fabric, seams, swivel and support condition. A torn, faded or tangled sock can be difficult to interpret. Maintenance access and work-at-height arrangements should be planned before installation. Use wind information within the complete site emergency procedure rather than as the only basis for entering an exposed area.
