Flame Detector
Specialist flame detection enquiries for assessed industrial fuel and process hazards.
Flame Detector: purpose and application
A flame detector responds to specified radiation characteristics associated with flames. Different UV, IR and combined technologies have different limitations and false-alarm susceptibilities. Selection depends on the actual fuel, expected fire and surrounding process. A flame detector is not simply a faster smoke detector and may not detect hidden or smouldering fires.
Selection and specification
State the fuel, hazard dimensions, viewing distance, obstructions and environmental conditions. Review field of view, mounting, required response, hazardous-area suitability where relevant and the control-system interface. Consider welding, hot surfaces and sunlight as potential influences. Test performance must be supported by documentation for the proposed detector and fuel.
Installation, inspection and limitations
Keep the optical window clean and line of sight unobstructed. Use the correct manufacturer test equipment and review faults or nuisance activations promptly. Process alterations can change coverage. Installation and maintenance in hazardous areas need qualified personnel and suitable procedures rather than routine electrical substitution.

Common questions
Can a flame detector detect a fire behind solid equipment?
It generally needs an appropriate view of the flame. Obstructions and blind spots must be addressed in the design.
