Fire Fighting Nozzle: purpose and application
A firefighting nozzle controls the discharge from a suitable hose and water supply. Straight-stream, adjustable-pattern and specialist nozzles have different uses. Nozzle selection affects flow, reach, handling and reaction forces. A product that fits the hose coupling may still be unsuitable for the available pressure or the training of its intended operators.
Selection and specification
Confirm the inlet coupling, rated operating pressure, flow characteristics, shutoff arrangement and required stream patterns. Specify whether the nozzle is for a hose reel, hydrant hose or specialist industrial application. Materials, weight and handling should be considered alongside performance. A nozzle should be selected as part of the hose and supply arrangement rather than as an independent accessory.
Installation, inspection and limitations
Inspect the outlet, pattern control, shutoff and connection for blockage or damage. Avoid improvised repairs or changes to the orifice. Testing needs controlled water discharge and trained handling. After use, inspect and store the nozzle according to its instructions so debris and corrosion do not prevent operation.
What to confirm before ordering
- 01Coupling and hose compatibility
- 02Flow and operating pressure
- 03Pattern and shutoff requirements
- 04Operator handling and maintenance
Common questions
Will a larger nozzle improve a weak water supply?
No. Increased nozzle demand can worsen performance if the system cannot supply the required pressure and flow.
