Beam Smoke Detector
Optical beam detection enquiries for suitable large or high spaces with clear sight lines.
Beam Smoke Detector: purpose and application
A beam smoke detector monitors an optical path rather than the small sensing chamber of a typical point detector. It may be considered for suitable warehouses, atria and other large spaces. Beam length, building movement, sunlight, dust and obstructions affect selection. It is not a universal substitute for ceiling-mounted point detection.
Selection and specification
Provide the room dimensions, roof height, structural arrangement and likely obstacles. Confirm the proposed detector range, reflector or transmitter arrangement and panel interface. Mounting needs to remain stable and accessible for alignment and testing. Future shelving, signs or suspended equipment should not block the beam path.
Installation, inspection and limitations
Maintenance includes checking alignment, cleanliness and the manufacturer test functions. Repeated faults may indicate building movement or an obstructed path. Use approved test tools and procedures rather than arbitrary objects. Record access arrangements, especially where maintenance requires work at height, so testing can be carried out safely.
What to confirm before ordering
- 01Room height and clear optical path
- 02Detector range and panel interface
- 03Stable mounting and sunlight exposure
- 04Access for alignment and testing
Common questions
Can a beam detector be installed behind warehouse racks?
Only if the designed optical path and detection coverage remain clear. Storage layout is a key part of the assessment.
